Nicholas upgraded to Cat. 1 hurricane

With the latest report from the National Hurricane Center, Tropical Storm Nicholas has been upgraded to Hurricane Nicholas as winds have been reported over 75 MPH.

Its noteworthy track right along the Texas coastline has maximized its time over water, while doing just enough internally to stay aligned versus wind shear. It will be the 19th tropical cyclone to hit the continental US since May 2020.

Tropical Storm Nicholas has upgraded to a Category 1 hurricane as of 10 p.m. Gusts of 75mph have been recorded. The storm has also changed direction and that could impact the future strength. Since the last update “Nicholas” has increased forward movement by 7mph to now 12mph and it is now headed north.

Storm is located just 20 miles southeast of Matagorda.

The now north/northeast movement of the storm means the center will stay over water a bit longer before landfall and that means the best chance for a strengthening to hurricane strength will happen then.

Current forecast calls for 70mph winds near landfall later tonight.
