Volunteers needed to turn the tide on trash

Employees from Tenaris Bay City participated in this Adopt-A-Beach cleanup from 2015. That year nearly 400 volunteers cleaned 5.5 miles of beach removing 18,900 pounds of trash on Matagorda Beach.

Everything is bigger in Texas and that includes the 600-mile coastline along the Gulf of Mexico. Our state is home to the longest undeveloped barrier island (Padre Island) and we already know Matagorda County is tops in the whole country for coastal bird watching.

The national USA Today newspaper last week named the top ten beaches in Texas and Matagorda Beach finished fifth behind only Crystal, Surfside and South Padre with Rockport finishing first.

This Saturday, all three beaches in the county will be tended to as part of the annual Adopt-A-Beach Spring Cleanup as will 24 other beaches along Texas’ Gulf Coast.

“The Texas Coast is a go-to destination for vacationers from all over,” said Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush. “Travelers want to play in the sand under the Texas sun. Late last summer Hurricane Harvey ravaged the Texas coast, but the recovery is well underway and this is an opportunity for folks to pitch in and declare that the Texas coast is back in business.”

Volunteers wanting to sign up can go online at texasadoptabeach.org to take part in a fun-filled day at the beach that makes a difference.

Every volunteer will be given data cards, gloves, pencils and trash bags. All volunteers are asked to wear closed-toe shoes, bring plenty of sunscreen and drinking water. Temperatures Saturday are forecast to be about 80 degrees but there is a 50 percent chance of rain. The Adopt-A-Beach events are held rain or shine.
