Jack Grigsby's estranged wife was arrested for his murder along with a Denison man in a case officials are calling "murder for hire."
Mary Katherine "Cathie" Grigsby, 59, of Clute, and Donald Ray Harrison, 50, of Denison, were arrested at their homes Friday, June 5, on capital murder charges, said Capt. Richard Rooth, Matagorda County Sheriff's Office spokesman.
Sgt. Robert Thompson and Sgt. Kurtis Brown arrested Harrison at his Denison home and Sgt. Kurtis Brown and Sgt. Christine Gibson arrested Grigsby at her home in Clute before transporting them to the Matagorda County Jail.
Judge Raymond Taggart, Justice of the Peace Pct. 6, set a $1 million bond for both suspects.
Jack, 72, was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head in his Sargent home on Sunday, May 17.
Cathie was the first one to find Jacks body and call the Sheriff's Office.
She told officers that she arrived at her husband's residence about 9 p.m. on Sunday, May 17.
"Mrs. Grigsby stated her husband was pet sitting her dog while she attended an out of town church seminar," according to information from the original news release.
Upon entering the residence, Cathie found her husband on the living room floor with blood on his body.
There was no sign of forced entry or any type disturbance inside the residence.
Rooth said working on the case was "truly a team effort and that each of the investigators contributed in critical evidence finding and role in solving the murder for hire case."
"We are extremely proud of the hard work and dedication by the Criminal Investigation Division," said Matagorda County Sheriff Gary Mathis.
Sgt. Robert Thompson was the lead investigator on the case with assistance from Sgt. Charlotte Brown, Sgt. Doug Pruitt and Teresa Mendoza, Identification Division, worked tirelessly to put the pieces of this murder puzzle together, said Rooth.
Texas Rangers Jose Noe Diaz and David Maxwell, Texas Department of Public Safety Dive Team and Susan Maxwell, District Attorney's Office investigator, also assisted with the case.
