Cell phone violations begin in school zones

The Bay City Police Department reminds residents to begin observing the no cell phones in school zones law immediately.
According to Lt. Andrew Lewis, Bay City Police Department spokesperson, officers will begin pulling over motorists and issuing warnings for drivers using cell phones in school zones on the first day of school.
Technically, the law doesn't go into effect until Sept.1, but Bay City police officers want drivers to start the habit on day one of the school year.
"As of Sept. 1, there will be zero tolerance for drivers using cell phones in the school zones," said Lewis.
The fines could be as high as $200 for violators.
The law only applies to drivers and excludes use of hands-free cellular devices.
It also only applies during posted school zone hours.
