Published December 23, 2009

A three-year-old Bay City boy died from injuries sustained in a home accident at a residence in the 2300 block of Toulouse Street around 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 20.

Bay City Police Officers were dispatched to Matagorda Regional Medical Center and learned the child was killed after a dresser and television set fell on him, said Lt. Andrew Lewis, Bay City Police Department spokesman,

The child had been climbing on the dresser to reach something sitting on top of the TV when both objects toppled over and landed on the child.

Investigators followed up on the case and do not suspect foul play.

"At this time, it appears to be accidental," said Lewis.

"On behalf of the Bay City Police Department, our heart goes out to the family," he said.

"We will continue to keep them in our prayers."

Unlawful possession of a controlled substance

Riding his bicycle in the dark with no front light in the 1700 block of Austin Street led to the arrest of a man carrying controlled pharmaceuticals without a prescription about 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 18.

Officers made contact with the man and, while checking him for weapons, discovered a cigarette box in his front pocket.

After obtaining permission to look inside the box, officers found several pills.

The subject told the officers the pills were a controlled substance and that he did not have a prescription for them.

Kevin Allen Parson, 28, of Bay City, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and taken to the Matagorda County Jail.

A Bay City man was caught with cocaine after neighbors reported suspicious activity in the 1100 block of Avenue I to police about 9 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 18.

Concerned citizens contacted police and reported that subjects were smoking marijuana near a vacant house, said Lewis.

The officers found a subject standing behind the vacant house, who told officers he was waiting for a friend to get home.

Officers asked the subject if he was carrying illegal contraband and found a baggie filled with a white powdery substance that field-tested positive for cocaine.

James Lee Lopez, Jr., 27, of Bay City, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and taken to Matagorda County Jail.

Habitation burglaries

A Bay City man returned from a trip out-of-town to find his home burglarized in the 4300 block of Mockingbird Lane about 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 19.

The victim told officers that he was missing a 50-inch and 32-inch television and a computer system.

The homeowner told officers that the burglary must have happened some time after Dec. 16.

There are no suspects and the case is under investigation by Det. Cpl. Tommy Lytle.

A resident in the Sea Breeze apartments returned home from work to find his door had been kicked in and several electronic appliances missing from his home about 1:30 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 22.

The victim told police he was missing a laptop, Nintendo DSI, several movies on DVD, and a small amount of cash.

There are no suspects.
