Janice Hawthorne, office manager in the County Attorneys office, declared her candidacy for the position of County Clerk in a Monday, June 15 news release.
County Clerk Gail Denn, announced that she would not seek re-election earlier this year.
Hawthorne has served as office manager for the county attorney for the past 11 years.
During that time she has worked with the County Clerk's office on numerous occasions, she said.
"Therefore, I have extensive knowledge of county events, business and personnel," said Hawthorne.
Her goal is to be able to provide the public and the courts with prompt, courteous and knowledgeable service on a daily basis.
"I will strive to maximize the use of available technology in the County Clerk's office to provide service to all county residents in the most efficient manner, whether in person, at the counter, by mail or by telephone," said Hawthorne.
She is married to Justin Hawthorne. They have two sons - Jace, 8, and Karson, 1.
"We pride ourselves on maintaining a loving and caring household," said Hawthorne.
"And I want to carry over such an environment to the County Clerk's office."
Hawthorne is a fourth generation resident of Matagorda County, a 1993 graduate of Van Vleck High School and attended Wharton County Junior College.
"My educational and professional experiences have paved the way for me to become a great County Clerk," said Hawthorne.
"I have a great working relationship with the current elected officials," she said. "I am looking forward to rolling up my sleeves and getting to work right beside them. And with the help of Matagorda County voters, WE can make it happen."
