Firm to manage transfer station

Published October 21, 2009

Matagorda County Commissioners secured a management firm for the county transfer station during their regular meeting Monday, Oct. 19.

Sprint Logistics, LP, currently subcontracted to manage the transfer station by Waste Management, submitted the only bid for a contract with the county.

Ruben Gonzales, Matagorda County Environmental Health director, said the firm actually bid a little lower than expected.

George Deshotels, Commissioner Pct. 2, said now that the City of Bay City Sanitation Department will not utilize the transfer station, it wouldn't be a profitable venture for the county.

"We'll try to minimize the (financial) loss to the county," said Deshotels.

"With the city taking their business to Needville, just realize this will not be profitable to the county."

"This will be a service that we offer our citizens," he said.

Gonzales said all of the equipment needed to run the transfer station has been secured and for a fair price.

Dan Pustka, Commissioner Pct. 1, thanked Gonzales for his efforts in securing the equipment and management company needed to keep the transfer station open for Matagorda County citizens.

In other news, commissioners:

 appointed Letisia Ramos to fill the unexpired term of the Rev. James Roberson and Karen Hickl to fill the unexpired term of Barbara Sliva on the Wharton-Matagorda Children's Protective Services board;

 approved the Matagorda County fairgrounds for use by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and the Environmental Protection Agency in an emergency;

 hired Holden Roofing to fix a major leak in the roof of the courthouse;
