Twin sisters Yvette and Yvonne Segura fit right in as coaches and teachers when they came to Bay City High School four years ago.
"They welcomed us with open arms," said Yvette. "They supported us in any way and if we had a problem they would take care of the situation quick. I like the small community and the support the school district has."
The Seguras came to town from McPherson College in Kansas where they played sports and got their degrees. They had scholarships there.
Yvette got to Bay City first and she was able to help get Yvonne hired.
"It just worked out that way," said Yvette. "They were looking for Spanish teachers here."
Both sisters competed in cross country track at Rivera High School in Brownsville. They graduated in 2000.
Both are currently assistants under head basketball coach Sherby Wilkerson. Yvette keeps stats for the team and faxes them to the Bay City Tribune on a timely basis. She also assists in track.
Yvonne is also the junior varsity coach in basketball and volleyball. She will also help coach powerlifting which cranks up in January.
"We try to bring a lot of discipline into the program," said Yvette. "We had to work twice as hard where we came from to compete against the upper state athletes."
"I try to give them an intense workout to be up there with the rest," Yvette said.
And they aquired that trait from their parents who were strict with discipline.
"We did that by growing up with that experience," said Yvette and Yvonne.
"Our college coaches brought that out as well. We try to bring in what we learned from our high school and college coaches."
"We still try to make it fun for them to enjoy and practice at the same time. If they love the sport, they will practice hard."
"You want to try and achieve goals that you make. I'm going to try as hard as I can as a coach to work to achieve the goal. When the coaches work as a team and the athletes work as a team, we can make something happen," said Yvonne.
The sisters started playing sports when they were 10-years old.
"Basketball, track and cross country were our passion," they said.
Yvonne likes basketball the most.
"It's more of a contact sport," said Yvonne.
They don't have much spare time in their lives as Yvonne takes care of her11-month-old son who she brings to practice sometimes.
"I like to have a good time with him," said Yvonne.
"I enjoy working with my sister a lot and we support each other in the athletic program, and as teachers. She's my best friend. Were so used to each other."
"We are there for each other. Now we bring our friendship to the kids. We are there for them," Yvonne said.
"Being a twin is special. We support each other. Maybe we could never be apart."
"We are known throughout the community. They ask us if we are the twins but we confuse them."
