Juveniles arrested in Sargent thefts

Published September 20, 2009

Three juveniles were arrested last week in connection with the string of break-ins and criminal mischief cases in Sargent over the summer.

According to Sgt. Charlotte Brown, Matagorda County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman, the teens, 13, 14 and 16, were charged with multiple offenses of felony theft, burglary of a motor vehicle and criminal mischief.

Sgt. Robert Thompson and Sgt. Doug Pruitt, of the Matagorda County Sheriff's Office, obtained confessions from the three youths who admitted to stealing golf carts and burglarizing numerous vehicles, Brown said.

"All three used golf carts for joy riding and a method of transportation in the Seagull and Creekside areas to steal beer, ice chests and liquor from porches or residences as well as from boats," Brown explained.

Several items, including a cell phone, were stolen from two motor vehicles.

"The cell phone was recovered in one of the abandoned golf carts and that is what lead investigators to the juveniles," said Brown.

According to Thompson, the juveniles were charged, booked and released to their parents.

Their cases have been referred to Matagorda County Juvenile Probation Department.
