Vera Ruth Anderson Lusk

June 6, 1935 –

Sept. 20, 2012

Vera Ruth Anderson Lusk was born on June 6, 1935 in Mills County Texas.

Ruth was the third daughter of Charlie Victor and Lillie Bell Shipp Anderson.

Ruth grew up in central Texas in the Goldthwaite area. Shortly after World War II her family relocated to Austin, Texas. She graduated from Austin High School in 1953.

In 1955, Ruth married R.Q. Lusk and relocated to Bay City, Texas where he was employed as an engineer for Central Power and Light. They raised their two sons, Robert and John, there.

Ruth was active in the 6th Street Church of Christ for the entire time that she lived in Bay City, teaching third grade Sunday school for nearly 40 years. She was also a Cub Scout den mother with Pack 51 while her sons were in Cub Scouts. Her friends, family, and neighbors fondly remember her annual Christmas cookie baking.

In the mid 1990s, following her husband’s death, she bravely reinvented her life and moved across country to Portland, Oregon. Here she was an active member of the Portland First Christian Church. She was well-known in her neighborhood in northeast Portland, where she walked every day and took coffee and conversation at Peet’s coffee.

She passed away on September 20, 2012.

She is preceded in death by her parents and husband.

She is survived by: her son, Dr. Robert Lusk and his partner Christopher Bailey (her third son to hear her tell it), and her son, John Lusk; as well as her sisters, Charlene White (James), Lois McClean, and Jo Anderson; along with many nieces and nephews and many good friends and neighbors who loved her dearly (both in Oregon and Texas).

The family will welcome friends for viewing at Taylor Bros Funeral Home from 4 until 6 p.m. on Wednesday evening, September 26, 2012.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 27, 2012, at Cedarvale Cemetery.
