Two East Bernard High School students were involved in a head-on collision with a disabled lumber truck in the early morning hours of Sunday, January 29, 2017. One was killed while the other is in critical condition at a Houston hospital.

MATAGORDA – An early morning trip to go duck hunting turned tragic Sunday as one teenager was killed and another critically injured after the truck they were driving slammed head-on into a disabled and unoccupied lumber truck.

Killed in the accident was 17-year old Nicholas Kain Sebring of East Bernard. His passenger, 17-year old Victor James Tichacek, had to be Life Flighted in critical condition to Houston’s Memorial Hermann hospital.

Sgt. James Orr with the Matagorda County Sheriff’s Office said they were called out at 6:07 am after being notified of a crash heading southbound on Hwy 60 in Matagorda near Truck Route Road. The Matagorda Fire Dept. DPS and EMS were notified immediately.

Upon arrival, they saw a 2012 Ford F-150 had collided with a 2005 International Truck that was broken down on the shoulder of Hwy 60. Orr said the Ford truck was occupied by the two teens. Sebring was deceased at the scene and the investigator believes Tichacek was critically injured when he was ejected from the vehicle.

According to the accident report received by DPS, the teenagers were heading southbound on Hwy. 60 while the lumber truck was on the north side of the road. DPS believes the pickup truck crossed the centerline, drifted to the opposite side of the road and hit the stalled lumber truck head-on. The investigating officer believes that the driver of the pickup likely fell asleep as there was no evidence of braking.

There has been no official release from East Bernard ISD at this time, but a post on their Facebook page on Sunday that reads as follows:
