Cedar Lane Baptist Church will celebrate its 75th year of ministry to Cedar Lane and the surrounding community on Saturday, Aug. 27 and Sunday, Aug. 28. Mother Zion Pastoral Appreciation
Mother Zion Baptist Church will have a Pastoral Appreciation Service for Pastor Murray G. Martin. The celebration will continue at 11:15 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 28 with pastor Chris Hartwell, Cross Roads Community Church in Pearland, as the speaker. Little Mister & Miss Rice Festival Registration
The Blackcat All-Sport Booster Club will hold registration for the Little Mister and Miss Rice Festival contest from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29 and Monday, Sept. 12 at the Service Center. The contest is open to boys and girls from 4 to 10 years of age as of Aug. 22. There is a $40 fee to enter. The one girl and one boy who raise the most funds by the deadline, 10 a.m. on Oct. 1, will be crowned Little Miss and Little Mister Rice Festival. Judges will judge for personality, best dress and most photogenic. All contestants get a trophy and will ride on a float in the parade on Oct. 8. Vessel Turn In Program
Matagorda County has partnered with the Texas General Land Office and Texas Parks & Wildlife to offer county residents the opportunity to dispose of inoperable and derelict vessels through the Vessel Turn In Program (VTIP). Vessels can be dropped off from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 6-8 at Matagorda County Precinct 2 at 487 Magnolia Street in Matagorda (979-863-7861) or Matagorda County Precinct 3 at 2500 SH 35 South in Palacios (361-972-2719). The Texas GLO and TP&W will verify the vessel qualifies for disposal; all hazardous material (fuel, oil and batteries) will be removed, the vessel destroyed and transported to the landfill for disposal. Boat must be clear of waste and debris. You are encouraged to participate in this free program is you own a vessel under 26 feet long in need of disposal. Longer boats may be accepted on a case-by-case basis.
2nd Friday Paddlers’ Meet-ups
Matagorda Adventures Company, a full-service kayaking enterprise, invites kayakers, canoeists and SUPers to join them fro a leisurely exploration of the coastal waters surrounding Matagorda where they are headquartered. This casually structured meet-up of water-loving paddlers is scheduled to take place near Matagorda from 6:30-10 p.m. on the second Friday of each month. Matagorda County Patriot Day 2016
On September 11, we will mark the 15th anniversary of the attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. A group of Matagorda county residents will host an event at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 11 at Bay City Memorial Stadium to remember those who fell victim to terrorists in New York and Washington D.C. This event is opened to the public to honor the memory of those victims.
Blessing Knights of Columbus shrimp and gumbo meal
The Knights of Columbus Council 4307 in Blessing is sponsoring a shrimp etouffe and gumbo meal on Sunday, Sept. 11 in Blessing at the St. Peter’s Catholic Church Parish Hall. Serving will start at 11 a.m. The meal will consist of shrimp etouffe and gumbo with rice, dessert, and tea or coffee. A large bowl with dessert and beverage will be $9. A live auction will also be held during the afternoon. The proceeds of the meal will be used for educational programs and scholarships for the youth in the area. Everyone is cordially invited to come to Blessing and enjoy a fine meal of shrimp etouffe and gumbo.

First Presbyterian Church will hold a fundraiser lunch for John and Cindy Hodges from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17.
