Road test awaits Van Vleck with Schulenburg
Back in the win column in district play, Van Vleck faces a tough road test this Friday when the Leopards travel to Schulenburg to take on Shorthorns.
Schulenburg will come into contest with a 2-1-district record while Van Vleck enters the contest at 1-1. The Shorthorns are coming off a 42-7 loss at the hands of East Bernard last week while Van Vleck defeated Tidehaven 34-14.
Van Vleck Head Football Coach Ron Blackmon knows this week will be a tough challenge for his Leopards.
“They have a very big front line and are as big as anybody we have seen this year,” Blackmon said of the Shorthorns. “They are a good football team and playing them on the road will be a very big challenge for us.”
Blackmon admitted he was disappointed how the contest with Tidehaven finished out last week.
“The game got out of hand in the fourth quarter and you could tell there were a lot of extra stuff going on that didn’t need to be happening,” Blackmon said. “We know it is a rivalry contest and we have played tough games with Tidehaven in the past but that didn’t need to happen.”
Schulenburg could manage only seven first downs against East Bernard last week but that strength on the offensive line is what concerns Blackmon coming into this contest. Returnee Shawn Allen anchors the line at center for the Shorthorns and is flanked by Francisco Lara, Jaxon Fietsam, Cutter Morin and Austin Klesel on the line.
Van Vleck is paced by quarterback Cameran Hudson, who has passed for 970 yards and eight touchdowns on the season while senior back De’metri Monroe leads the team in rushing with 947 yards and 11 touchdowns.
“We can’t make any mistakes in this game like we did against Tidehaven,” Blackmon said. “We had a lot of penalties that stopped us in the first half and we have to avoid them this week.”
A win this week would propel the Leopards into a contest against Ganado, who presently is 2-0 in district play but takes on East Bernard this week in a big home contest to determine the district leader.
