Sanders facing tampering charges
Matagorda County Justice of the Peace for Precinct 1 Jason Sanders was arrested and charged with tampering with a government record.
Sanders was booked into the Matagorda County Jail Feb. 26 and was released on a personal recognizance bond on the same date.
According to jail records, the offense date was Sept. 24, 2018.
Sanders was reached by the Tribune for a statement following his arrest.
“I have retained counsel regarding these charges, and I am awaiting their advice before I make a statement,” Sanders said in his reply to the Tribune.
Matagorda County District Attorney Steven Reis has recused his office in this particular case. The district attorney’s office in Wharton County has been appointed to represent the State in the prosecution against Sanders.
A sealed indictment was returned against Sanders Feb. 25.
Sanders was recently re-elected as Justice of the Peace for Precinct 1. He has lived in Bay City most of his life and is a 1987 graduate of Bay City High School. He has served the citizens of Matagorda County for nearly a decade and has served as Veteran’s Services Officer for four of those years.
Sanders also serves as Associate Municipal Judge for the city of Bay City since 2014.
