Dunham announces candidacy for MCND#1 Commissioner Position #2
It is with great pleasure that I announce my candidacy for Commissioner Position #2 of the Matagorda County Navigation District #1 (Port of Palacios). Having been in government and economic development for the last 25 years, I feel that I can bring a new and innovative perspective to the MCND #1 Board of Commissioners.
I was the economic developer for Bay City for the last 14 years. During that time, I was instrumental in establishing a permanent home for the Wharton County Community College Bay City Campus; recruited many of the new hotels and retail establishments; facilitated the financing, formation and $50,000 in grants for Fat Grass Restaurant in downtown Bay City. During my tenure we acquired over a dozen grants that funded over $1 million dollars of renovations and improvements around the square in Bay City. After years of exploration and tenacity, the County Judge and I were successful in getting a state-of-the-art family entertainment center, the Schulman Movie Bowl and Grille. I was also heavily involved in the successful recruitment the Tenaris plant to Matagorda County, with its $1.8 billion investment and creation of 600 high-paying jobs.
I have held many volunteer and board positions, including as a board member of: the Gulf Coast Economic Development District, the Texas Association of Rural Communities, the Houston-Galveston Area Council Local Development Corporation, as Past Assistant District Governor of Palacios Rotary Club and most recently with the Outrigger Event Center. I was honored to receive the George Holst award for excellence in economic development in 2011.
After a successful career as executive director for Bay City Community Development Corporation, I started working for Lynn Construction, doing business as Chipman Construction. I am ready to turn my attention on Palacios, the community where I have lived for the last 14 years and where I now work.
We have a great asset in the Port of Palacios. We have an opportunity to build on the shrimping industry and bring new industry and services that will bring jobs and diversification to our area.
It’s time to bring more jobs and economic development to the Port of Palacios. I humbly ask for your support and vote in the general election on the November 6, 2018.
