Auto-pedestrian accident claims life of elderly woman
Bay City Police officers spent the last week of March 2019 busy investigating auto-pedestrian accidents. The first accident occurred on Wednesday, March 27, at approximately 6:24 p.m. Dispatch received a call about a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle in the 800 block of Thompson Drive.
Officers on scene assisted EMS while Officer Ruben Gutierrez spoke with the driver of the vehicle, David B. Cohenour, 21, Palacios. Gutierrez noticed that Cohenour appeared to be intoxicated. He was transported to the Matagorda County Sherriff’s Office where standardized testing for intoxicated drivers could be performed.
Cohenour submitted to a blood test and was booked into the Matagorda County Jail for Intoxicated Assault with a Vehicle. The victim, a 44-year-old female from Bay City was transported by Lifeflight to a Houston area hospital.
The second accident occurred on Friday, March 29, at approximately 9 p.m. Officers were again dispatched to an auto-pedestrian accident. This one occurred in the 2400 block of 6th Street. Upon arrival, Officer Mikayla Cantu was assisted by a nurse on scene and began CPR on the victim who was lying in the roadway.
Detectives were called out to interview witnesses and the driver of the vehicle that struck the victim. It was determined the victim, an 85-year-old female from Bay City, was wearing dark clothing and tried to cross the street. The area is not well lit, and the driver of the vehicle did not see the victim until it was too late. The driver tried to swerve and brake, but the vehicle struck the victim.
The victim was transported to Matagorda Regional Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. There have been no charges filed at this time.
