Texas Armed Services Scholarship Program Applications being accepted

Nominations for the 2019-2020 Texas Armed Services Scholarship Program (TASSP) have opened for next year’s class (fall 2019/spring 2020 academic year). This scholarship supports students who choose to participate in a college ROTC program and commit to serve in our armed forces.  I have had the honor and privilege of nominating several students for this scholarship in previous funding cycles and witnessed them grow into outstanding leaders who embody the values of dedication, service, and sacrifice for their country and their fellow Americans.

A student must meet the eligibility criteria listed below in order to receive an initial award.  He or she must also enter into an agreement requiring a four year commitment as a member of the Texas Army National Guard, Texas Air National Guard, Texas State Guard, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Merchant Marine or a commissioned officer in any branch of the armed services of the United States.

Annually, the Governor and the Lieutenant Governor may each appoint two students, and each State Senator and each State Representative may appoint one student to receive a conditional TASSP scholarship. A maximum of 185 students may be appointed each year.  A student may receive up to $10,000 for the 2019-2020 academic year and, dependent on funding available, students may receive up to four years of awards.

In order to be considered for a TASSP, a student enrolling in higher education straight from high school must meet two of the following four academic criteria at the time of application:

• Be on track to graduate, or has graduated high school with the Distinguished Achievement Program (DAP) or the International Baccalaureate Program (IB);

• Have a high school GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale;

• Achieve a college readiness score on the SAT (1070) or ACT (23);

• Be ranked in the top one-third of the prospective high school graduating class.

Students must be enrolled in a college or university in the fall 2019/spring 2020 academic year in order to be nominated for a TASSP during the current nomination cycle.

I am proud that the State of Texas allows me the opportunity to give back to students who plan to serve our nation in the military.   I look forward to nominating a student in my district so that they will obtain a quality education that will prepare them for a bright future in our armed services.

If you would like to be considered for nomination for the Texas Armed Services Scholarship Program, please email your cover letter and resume to my District Director at nancy.wollam@speaker.texas.gov by July 19, 2018.  You may also contact Nancy at 979-848-1770 with any questions.
