Roots and Wings
We had the pleasure of entertaining our grandchildren Chiara and Sawyer over Labor Day Weekend. Entertaining them was simple because we live in Matagorda. No need to look further than the Colorado River and the Gulf of Mexico to ignite fun-filled days of excitement and adventure. Living on the river gives us a front row seat to the parade of shrimping and fishing boats navigating the waters to and from the Gulf. Looking at it through the eyes of a 7 year old and a two year old exemplifies the wonder and fascination found in nature.
Whether they’re fishing off the pier or on our boat, using binoculars to spot all the species of birds or taking a jeep ride on the beach and collecting sea shells, they form their very own roots and childhood memories of Matagorda that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. My husband Sam and I take every opportunity to remind our grandchildren how much they are loved and appreciated as members of our family. Just as we experienced the lives of our children being influenced and shaped by us, we continue now to do the same with Chiara and Sawyer.
No matter where life leads them, they will have strong family roots, grounded in love, to remind them where they come from and wings to lift them beyond their wildest imagination. Sharing our love and respect for nature with them promises the next generation will be influenced as well. Our beautiful coastal area is the perfect teaching platform. What better teacher than nature to exhibit free expression of God’s creation?
Our task must be to free ourselves…by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and its beauty.
