Matagorda to host Texas Trio Classic this weekend


Matagorda County will play host to one of the largest inshore fishing tournaments June 6-8 in Matagorda.

Texas Trio Classic is hosting its annual fishing tournament. Each year, the tournament donates their proceeds to a different cancer research facility.’

The Texas Trio Classic has two simple goals. Fish For a Cure and host the best inshore fishing tournament in the state of Texas.

“They do an excellent job putting together a first-class tournament to Matagorda,” said Matagorda County Precinct 2 Commissioner Kent Pollard. “This is a big draw to Matagorda and Bay City as this tournament will fill the motels in the area this weekend.”

The tournament has two brackets for artificial and live bait. 

There will be cash prizes for the individual who have the biggest trout, and an optional side pot for trout and redfish.

There are also prizes for the team who has the best Texas Trio Classic- one redfish, one trout and one flounder.

Besides raising money for a great cause, Texas Trio Classic puts on an outstanding weigh-in. There will be BBQ, live music, raffle prizes and shirts and cozies for sale. The Rich O’Toole Band will be performing at the weigh-in. Friends and families of the fishermen are encouraged to come hang out at the marina before and after the weigh-in.

Last year, the Texas Trio Classic made donations to the Boys and Girls Club of Bay City and Matagorda County, the Matagorda Wellness Foundation, the Matagorda County branch of the American Cancer Society, JP Moody Scholarship Fund, National Foundation for Ectodermal Dysplasias, Texas Children’s Hospital and the Matagorda Volunteer Fire Department.
