Tidehaven’s Galvan named TSWA All-State
Former Tidehaven pitcher Bryce Galvan was named to the second team of the Collin Street Bakery/Texas Sports Writers Association Class 3A all-state baseball team.
The Tiger right-hander was also a second-team all-state selection by the Texas Baseball Coaches Association.
Galvan was 10-1 in his 15 appearances with a 0.82 earned run average this past season. He pitched 68.2 innings, giving up only 22 runs, eight of them earned.
He also mastered a pretty good fastball, which helped him to strike out 93 batters this season, compared to 39 walks.
Galvan was also impressive at the plate, hitting .287 with three home runs (which led the team) and 18 RBIs. He also led the Tigers with seven doubles.
He sign a letter of intent to play at Texas A&M-Kingsville, one of the powers in NCAA Division II baseball.
Galvan’s teammates, pitcher/infielder Gordo Moreno and outfielder Brandon Rozner were honorable mention selections to the team.
BCHS to hold community pep rally
Bay City High School will hold a community pep rally for the football and volleyball teams on Friday, Aug. 10 at the school gymnasium from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Blackcat athletes and coaches will be on hand, as well as the band, cheerleaders, mascot, Aristocats and Crunk Squad.
There will also be free hot dogs and drinks, sponsored by HEB.
Bay City volleyball makes change to schedule
The Bay City volleyball team made a small change to its schedule, moving one of its matches at the Yorktown tournament.
Instead of playing on Thursday, Aug. 9, the Ladycats will play on Friday, Aug. 10 and Saturday, Aug. 11 at the tournament.
Bay City opens the season on Tuesday at Tidehaven playing two matches, one against Tidehaven and another against Hallettsville Sacred Heart. The matches begin at 3 p.m. at the Tigerdome.
TGA Regional Amateurs Set for Aug. 10-12
The Texas Golf Association’s 2018 North and South Regional Amateur Championships will be held concurrently from Aug. 10-12.
The North Amateur will be contested on the Dye Course at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club in McKinney. The Live Oak Course at Fair Oaks Ranch Golf & Country Club, located north of San Antonio, will host the South Amateur presented by Impact Precision Golf.
Conducted by the TGA since 2003, the events are open to male amateur golfers who have a certified GHIN Handicap Index of 8.4 or less and reside in the region relative to their respective championship. The TGA uses the 31st parallel in Salado as the delineation between the North and South regions.
The format for the 84-player starting field in both the North and South Amateur is 54 holes individual stroke play.
The winner and runner-up in each championship, if eligible, earn exemptions into this year’s Texas Mid-Amateur to be held Sept. 14-16 at River Oaks Country Club in Houston. Additionally, the top three finishers will receive an automatic exemption into the 2019 Texas Amateur Championship.
