Van Vleck outlasts Tidehaven for final district playoff berth
In District 23-3A softball, the fourth and final playoff spot would come down to a matchup between Van Vleck and Tidehaven. Both teams had battled hard to get to this spot and both teams earned the playoff berth and when the smoke was clear on the field, Van Vleck had outslugged Tidehaven 17-15 for the win and playoff berth.
This game was pure offense from the very beginning.
Van Vleck ran out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning but Tidehaven answered with six runs to take a 6-4 lead.
But the Lady Leps came right back with a seven-run second inning to take an 11-6 lead over Tidehaven. Again, Tidehaven answered right back with three runs to cut the lead to 11-9 after two innings of play.
After Tidehaven cut the margin to 11-10 in the third, the two teams traded single markers in the fourth and fifth inning as Van Vleck continued to hold onto a slim 13-12 lead over the Lady Tigers.
The Lady Leps created a bit of distance between themselves and Tidehaven with a four-run sixth inning to assume a 17-12 lead. But Tidehaven was cut the lead to 17-13 and then made the Lady Leps hold on in the bottom of the seventh as the Lady Tigers pushed across two runs to cut the lead to 17-15 but Van Vleck was able to hold on for the exciting win.
Van Vleck moved on in the Class 3A playoffs but was eliminated by New Waverly in the first round of the playoffs in a two-game sweep.
