Neary, 99, inducted into BCISD Distinguished Alumni Class of 2018
Helen Cates “Boo” Neary, 99 years old, was inducted into the Bay City ISD Distinguished Alumni Class of 2018 on October 26th, along with 12 other deserving BCISD graduates. Neary is the oldest living inductee.
Mrs. Neary said, “In all of my years in Bay City, Texas, I never thought of being honored in this way! To walk on the football field to accept an award of being a Distinguished Alum was something that only famous people got to do! For sure, that is not I. Yet, I receive this honor with great humility and with great thanks to everyone in this wonderful Bay City ISD and community who has made my life worth living! It is hard to believe that I will soon be 100—a century-- and how much I cherish my years in Bay City! Not only did this school district give me the education I needed to make a living to support my child and mother, but the entire community assisted me in rearing my child! It does, indeed, take a village to raise a child and no community could have done it better than Bay City for all who were single mothers during the 40’s, 50’s, 60’s. I want to especially thank Ira Chasnoff for nominating me for this honor. I was especially touched with his words. It demonstrates society’s values-- that when you love someone, each of us must do what it takes to love, be kind to, and to take care of each other while on this earth. I am happy to say, that I have lived during the best of times in America and that is why I have continued to be engaged in this school district and the community. I want everyone to experience the goodness as I have. All will remain in my heart and I thank you so very much.”
