Although still in the planning stages, the Van Vleck ISD board of trustees took the first view of their new high school and middle school, which will be merged into one new building.
Architectural firm PBK presented the school board with preliminary drawings of the new building at Monday’s board meeting, as well as drawings of improvements to the football stadium. It is the next stage of the $88.2 million bond that was passed by voters in the district last year.
Ron Bailey of PBK addressed the board with the preliminary renderings of the building, saying that the drawings of the new elementary school building will be due next month.
The drawings were formed by a committee of administration members and teachers, along with architects that met last year and came up with a design for the new schools.
The high school entrance and staff parking will be on Avenue G (as well as bus pickup and drop-off), while the middle school entrance and parking will be on Avenue J. Bus pickup and drop-off for the
The building will share an area that can be used as the cafeteria and as an auditorium for school events. A movable wall will be used to separate the two schools during lunchtime.
The new school will be placed on the same land as the old high school building, which will be demolished after completion of the high school part of the building.
Construction of the new high school part of the building is scheduled to begin in September and expected to be completed by midsummer of 2020. The other half of the building that will house the middle school students is expected to begin after the high school construction ends and is to be completed by the end of 2021.
The improvements at Burl McKinney Stadium include new home bleachers made of aluminum that can hold 1,246 seats, along with a new press box with room for two coaching booths, a radio room, an outside deck for cameras and a room for media and timekeepers.
There are also improvements scheduled for the restroom/concessions building and refurbishing of the running track at the stadium. But Bailey also left open an option for the board of building a new and larger bathroom and concessions area on the south end of the stadium that can be shared with the visitor’s side.
Bailey said that the board can decide later to either build the new building or just renovate the old bathroom/concession building on the home side.
“We can get a price and you (the board) can decide to do it or hold off,” Bailey told the board.
Construction of the new bleachers and press box is scheduled to begin in June and be completed before the first football game of the 2018 season. If the new restroom/concession building is selected to be built, construction of the new building is expected to last from June to December.
