Parade, wreaths to honor county veterans Nov. 10
Plans are already in motion for the annual Matagorda County Veterans Appreciation Parade. The annual event has been scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 10.
Registration will begin at 9 a.m. with the parade scheduled to start at 10 a.m. S.O.S will be served right after the parade.
The Matagorda County Veterans’ Appreciation Parade Committee is reaching out to county business and service organizations again this year.
“Many have supported our parade the last two years and we are thankful for their support,” said Debbie Christian, committee member. “But this year, we want to do more.”
This year, the parade committee also would like to honor veterans that have passed away as well. In keeping with that them, the committee has partnered with Wreaths Across America to accomplish this task.
Wreaths Across America is a national organization that each year marks their mission of remember, honor and teach is carried out by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies at cemeteries across America.
Wreaths Across America’s mission touches the lives of thousands of school, scout, civic and religious groups across the country through fundraising for wreath sponsorships. These groups help ensure that the group reaches its goal of placing a wreath on each hero’s grave.
“We feel that WAA’s mission: Remember, Honor and Teach is exactly what we hope to do for our community through both the parade and the ceremony,” Christian said. “Their mission and now ours is carried out with a wreath laying ceremony at cemeteries across the U.S. in December.”
Christian said that this year the group is working with Cedarvale in Bay City for the wreath laying ceremony.
“Our hope is to grow our volunteer base and be able to cover other cemeteries in our county next year,” Christian said.
The committee is seeking sponsors for the wreaths. They are $15 each and the group receives one free wreath for each two sold.
“Our goal is to place a wreath for every veteran at Cedarvale cemetery,” Christian said of the 900 veteran gravesites located at the cemetery.
Christian said if residents have a veteran at another location and would like to honor them with a wreath, contact her at 979-429-0179 or Leslei Enright at 979-476-0884 for more information.
