Susan Phillips has been named the 2018 Superintendent of Matagorda Independent School District, replacing past Superintendent Laura Shay.

“My contract was voted on and approved during the March meeting and runs from March 22, 2018, through June 30, 2021,” said Phillips.

The superintendent search process involved posting the position through professional organizations and the Education Service Center from December 2017 through February 1, 2018. Board members reviewed all applicants during their regularly scheduled February 15 board meeting, which led to the motion on Phillips in March.

Phillips began her educational career at Matagorda ISD in 2004, teaching Language Arts and Social Studies.

“I was encouraged to go into administration by Laura Shay, the previous superintendent and principal at the time, as well as fellow teacher Karen Pustejovsky,” said Phillips.

She earned her Master’s in Education and Administration in 2010 from Lamar University.

Upon Shay’s resignation in 2017, Phillips stepped up as Interim Superintendent while she completed her Superintendent Certification this past December from University of Houston in Victoria.

“There are no words to express the joy I felt when my contract was approved,” she said. “With my dedicated staff, eager students and wonderful board of trustees, we will mirror our district’s vision statement by “making our school a place where all children will succeed.”

Susan Phillips is married to Tommy Phillips, an operator at STP for 24 years, and has two sons, Zachary, 21, of Matagorda and Joshua, 20, of Pecos, TX.
