NAACP to host first scholarship banquet


The Bay City/Matagorda County Branch of the NAACP is sponsoring its first annual Scholarship Banquet Saturday, Oct. 20 at the Bay City Civic Center, 201 7th Street in Bay City. 

This year’s theme is “Get Out the VOTE!” The branch is encouraging citizens in attendance to make a difference at the polls by voting.

The social hour begins at 5:30 p.m. and the banquet at 6 p.m.

The banquet will include dinner, musical selections and keynote remarks by inspirational speaker Dr. James Douglas, President of the Houston Branch of the NAACP and Distinguished Professor of Law at Thurgood Marshall School of Law. Emcee is Ms. Donnye Stone of Bay City, and the President of the Bay City/Matagorda County Branch is Pastor Murray Martin.

The scholarship banquet is the branch’s way of reinvesting in the Matagorda County community, and monies raised will be used to support county youth scholarships.

The branch is partnering with a number of other civic groups and sponsors in the areas of voter registration, voter mobilization, and education, At the banquet, the branch will recognize outstanding student/students, lifetime members and will present an award to an individual for their outstanding service to the Matagorda County community.

Tickets are available from NAACP Banquet Committee members, for $40 and must be purchased in advance.

The community is invited to attend the event and support the scholarship winners and honorees.
